A bit about the show...

We’re all in this together in Disney Channel’s smash hit musical phenomenon featuring the students of East High

Disney Channel’s smash hit movie musical comes to life in Disney’s High School Musical JR. Troy, Gabriella and the students of East High must deal with issues of love, friends and family while balancing their classes and extra curricular activities. The show’s infectious, danceable songs are sure to engage performers and audiences alike.

It’s the first day after winter break at East High. The Jocks, Brainiacs, Thespians and Skater Dudes all find their cliques. Basketball team captain and resident jock, Troy, discovers that the brainy Gabriella, a girl he met singing karaoke on his ski trip, has just enrolled at East High. The couple causes an upheaval when they decide to audition for the high school musical. Although many students resent the threat posed to the “status quo,” Troy and Gabriella’s alliance might just open the door for others to shine as well.

Character Descriptions

Below we have the music and lyrics for all of our principal roles where your child can decide which roles they would like to audition for and practice at home.

Auditionees can be considered for more than one role but will only be required to do one audition – so choose the favourite and just let us know during the audition who else you would like us to keep in mind for.

We also would like to highlight that children/young people of any gender can audition for any of the principal roles and the production is a fully inclusive show.  We won’t be changing the gender of the role or the name of the character or the pronouns associated with the character, as this would be a violation of copyright.

Please note that there are other supporting roles that are not listed below, all auditonees will also be considered for these roles. Keep an eye out on our socials for information about some of these other super roles.

For your video recording please use the backing track provided, not the vocal track.

Please perform the musical numbers, using acting through song suitable for the character – don’t just sing the song be the character!

Troy Bolton

Character Description

Troy Bolton is the most popular student at East High and the star of the basketball team. A natural athlete and charismatic leader with charm to spare, Troy is admired by his classmates and teammates alike. However, beneath his confident exterior, he yearns to be more than what others—especially his father, Coach Bolton—expect him to be. Troy discovers a passion for singing but struggles to admit it, worried about how it will affect his friendships and reputation on the basketball team.

What We’re Looking For:
We need a solid actor who can convey the full range of Troy’s emotions, from his sensitive, vulnerable moments to his confident, self-assured side. The actor should be able to communicate Troy’s internal conflict between his expected role as a “jock” and his unexpected love for music.

Key Qualities:
– Natural Charisma and Leadership: Troy should have a strong, commanding presence, exuding both confidence and likeability as the most popular guy in school.
– Athleticism and Energy: Given his role as the basketball team’s star, an actor with athletic ability or physical presence will be ideal.
– Versatile Acting Skills: The actor must show emotional depth, portraying both Troy’s sensitive side when he sings and his self-assured, “team captain” attitude around his friends and teammates.
– Strong Singing and Dancing Ability: Since Troy has pivotal musical numbers, we’re looking for a performer with solid vocal ability who can sing with sincerity and emotional resonance, as well as handle choreography well.
– Chemistry with Gabriella: Troy’s connection with Gabriella is a key part of his journey, so we’ll look for an actor who can create a believable, heartfelt bond with her on stage.
– Subtle Confidence: While Gabriella starts off reserved, she finds her confidence as she steps into her love for singing. We need someone who can communicate that quiet strength as it emerges.

In the Audition:
– Acting: We’ll look for moments where the actor can show Troy’s internal conflict, his determination on the court, and his softer, more vulnerable side when singing. He should be able to portray Troy’s struggle between his expected role and his passion for music.
– Singing: A strong vocal ability is essential. We’ll be listening for the actor’s range and ability to deliver key songs like “Start of Something New” and “Breaking Free” with genuine emotion and clarity.
– Dancing and Physicality: Given Troy’s athletic background, we’ll observe his comfort and agility in movement and choreography. High energy and a natural athleticism will help bring Troy’s character to life, especially in scenes involving basketball or group choreography.
– Stage Presence: Troy should be magnetic and engaging, drawing the audience in with both his confidence and moments of vulnerability.

Ultimately, we’re looking for a performer who can embody Troy’s charm and leadership while capturing his journey of self-discovery and passion for music. This actor should balance both the athleticism and sensitivity that make Troy a well-rounded, relatable character.

Gabriella Montez is the new student at East High, a bright and independent young woman who’s trying to find her place among the school’s various cliques. A true “renaissance girl,” Gabriella doesn’t fit neatly into any one group and is learning to trust herself and grow in confidence along the way. While she is smart and independent, Gabriella can be shy and vulnerable at times, especially as she navigates new friendships and faces the pressures of high school. Her confidence blossoms when she discovers her talent and love for singing, especially in her connection with Troy.

What We’re Looking For:

– Chemistry with Troy: Gabriella’s relationship with Troy is crucial to the story. We’ll look for an actor who can create a believable, heartfelt connection with him, capturing the vulnerability and excitement of their budding romance.
– Subtle Confidence: While Gabriella starts off reserved, she finds her confidence as she steps into her love for singing. We need someone who can communicate that quiet strength as it emerges.

– Singing: A fantastic vocal ability is essential, with a focus on emotional expression and the ability to harmonize in duets.
– Stage Presence: Gabriella may be shy at first, but her presence should gradually grow as her confidence builds. We’re looking for someone who can captivate the audience through both subtle and powerful moments.

Ultimately, we’re looking for a performer who can capture Gabriella’s blend of intelligence, independence, and heart, and who can carry her transformation into a self-assured, passionate character.

Sharpay Evans

Character Description

Sharpay Evans is East High’s confident, ambitious, and ultra-talented “queen bee.” She thrives in the spotlight, fully embodying her role as the star of the school’s theatre scene alongside her twin brother, Ryan. Sharpay is used to getting what she wants and is not shy about showing her competitive edge, especially when it comes to the spring musical. Known for her dramatic flair, fashion sense, and larger-than-life personality, Sharpay can come across as self-centered and calculating, but underneath it all, she simply wants to shine. Her journey includes learning to balance her ambition with empathy and self-awareness.

What We’re Looking For:
We need a charismatic and confident performer who can portray Sharpay’s comedic, over-the-top nature while also capturing her softer side when she learns to grow. Sharpay’s character demands a dynamic stage presence, strong comedic timing, and a flair for the dramatic, along with excellent singing and dancing skills.

– Excellent Dance Skills: Sharpay’s numbers are high-energy, requiring strong dance ability and stage movement to keep up with her expressive and dramatic style.

Ryan Evans

Character Description

Ryan Evans is Sharpay’s twin brother and her loyal partner in all things theater at East High. Though he’s talented and shares his sister’s love for the stage, Ryan is often overshadowed by Sharpay’s dominant personality. He is an energetic, expressive, and charming performer with a natural flair for singing and dancing. Unlike Sharpay, Ryan is more open to collaboration and friendship outside their clique, showing a kinder, more easygoing nature. His journey includes finding his own voice and identity beyond being “Sharpay’s brother.”

What We’re Looking For:
We need a strong actor who can embody Ryan’s charm, humor, and growth. Ryan’s character requires a mix of comedic timing, warmth, and self-assuredness, along with excellent singing and dancing skills. He should be able to work in sync with Sharpay while also portraying his unique personality and his path to independence.

Key Qualities:
– Charming and Likeable: Ryan is fun, friendly, and approachable, with a bit of a quirky edge. We’re looking for an actor who can bring out his playful and endearing qualities, balancing his supportive nature with his desire to stand out.
– Excellent Comic Timing: Ryan’s comedic moments often come from his reactions to Sharpay’s antics and his interactions with other characters. Strong comedic instincts are essential to make him entertaining yet relatable.
– Strong Singer and Dancer: Ryan is a highly skilled performer who should have strong vocal and dance ability. He often performs alongside Sharpay, so he needs to be comfortable in duets and group numbers, with a knack for showmanship and flair.
– Good Chemistry with Sharpay: The actor must have strong on-stage chemistry with Sharpay, as their sibling relationship is key to both characters. Ryan needs to be able to play off her dramatic personality while bringing out his softer, more thoughtful side.
– Subtle Growth and Independence: While Ryan starts as Sharpay’s right-hand man, he eventually begins to carve his own path and show his individuality. We need someone who can portray this subtle evolution from sidekick to self-confident performer.

In the Audition:
– Acting: We’ll be looking for Ryan’s playful, kind-hearted side, as well as moments where he steps out of Sharpay’s shadow. He should be able to show his comedic chops while bringing depth to his character’s growth.
– Singing: Ryan’s singing should be strong and confident, with an expressive tone that brings his character to life, especially in duets and ensemble numbers like “What I’ve Been Looking For.”
– Dancing: As a skilled dancer, Ryan should handle choreography with ease, showing a mix of precision and a natural love for performing.

Ultimately, we’re looking for a performer who can capture Ryan’s blend of humour, heart, and hidden ambition, someone who can shine both with and without Sharpay. This actor should bring Ryan’s personal journey and growth to life in a way that’s both entertaining and genuinely touching.
