A bit about the show...

Horton the Elephant, the Cat in the Hat and all of your favorite Dr. Seuss characters spring to life onstage in Seussical KIDS, a fantastical musical extravaganza from Tony-winners, Lynn Ahrens and Stephen Flaherty (Lucky Stiff, My Favorite Year, Once on This Island, Ragtime).

Transporting audiences from the Jungle of Nool to the Circus McGurkus, the Cat in the Hat, our narrator, tells the story of Horton, an elephant who discovers a speck of dust containing tiny people called the Whos, including Jojo, a Who child, who gets in trouble for thinking too many “thinks.” Horton’s challenge is twofold – not only must he protect the Whos from a world of naysayers and dangers, but he must also guard an abandoned egg that’s been left in his care by the irresponsible Mayzie La Bird. Although Horton faces ridicule, danger, kidnapping and a trial, the intrepid Gertrude McFuzz never loses faith in him. Ultimately, the powers of friendship, loyalty, family and community are challenged and emerge triumphant!

Seussical KIDS is great fun for the whole family. Young performers will be excited to portray the characters from the popular Dr. Seuss books. This musical provides wonderful creative opportunities in terms of set design, lighting and costuming and can easily accommodate a large cast.

Character Descriptions

Below we have the music and lyrics for all of our principal roles where your child can decide which roles they would like to audition for and practice at home.

You can audition for more than one role.

We also would like to highlight that children/young people of any gender can audition for any of the principal roles and the production is a fully inclusive show.  We won’t be changing the gender of the role or the name of the character or the pronouns associated with the character, as this would be a violation of copyright.

Please note that there are other supporting roles that are not listed below, all auditonees will also be considered for these roles. Keep an eye out on our socials for information about some of these other super roles.

For your video recording please use the backing track provided, not the vocal track.

Please perform the musical numbers, using acting through song suitable for the character – don’t just sing the song be the character!

The Cats – open to Year 2

Who needs just one Cat in the Hat when you can have three?

The Cats (Cat 1, Cat 2, Cat 3) are mischievous, spirited creatures who take JoJo and the audience on quite an adventure. We are looking to cast three performers with great, confident voices and who can also move well.

The Cat Script Oh, The Thinks You Can Think - Song Lyrics Oh, The Thinks You Can Think (from the start until 0.45) - Vocal track Oh, The Thinks You Can Think (from the start until 0.45) - Backing track

Jojo – open to Reception – Year 2

JoJo is the audience’s link to the story.

The audience follows the narrative through their eyes (he’s also referred to as Child), so it’s most important to cast a performer with an earnest and open disposition.

Jojo Script It's Possible - lyrics It's Possible (until 1 min) - Vocal Track It's Possible (until 1min)- Backing track

Horton the Elephant – open to Year 2

Horton is a loveable elephant with a heart of gold.

We are looking for a great singer and actor in this important role, who can convey great loyalty and conviction to the Whos.

Horton Script Alone in the Universe - Song Lyrics Alone In The Universe (until 1.32) - Vocal Track Alone in the Universe (until 1.32) - Backing Track

Mr. Mayor and Mrs. Mayor – open to Year 2

Mr. Mayor is the mayor of Whoville and the perfect picture of patriarchy. He tries to keep the town happy and secure, which is quite a job since the tiny Whos are always in danger of being swept away and lost. Cast a young man who can portray an older age and a sense of authority.
Mrs. Mayor is the mayor’s wife and is most concerned with trying to make sure her child, JoJo, stays in line.

We are looking for two performers who are good singers and pair well together. Remember, Mr. and Mrs. Mayor are a team.

Please note, there is no singing audition for these parts.
Mr. Mayor and Mrs. Mayor Script

Gertrude McFuzz – open to Year 2

Very self-conscious about her one-feather tail. Gertrude gains confidence throughout the show, changing from an anxious, nervous, shy bird into someone whose self-worth doesn’t rest on her appearance. In other words, Gertrude realizes what’s truly important in her life.

We are looking for a wonderful actor and a great singer in this role, who works well with Horton.
Gertrude McFuzz Script The One Feather Tail of Gertrude McFuzz - lyrics The One Feather Tail of Gertrude McFuzz (whole song) - Vocal Track The One Feather Tail of Gertrude McFuzz (whole track) - Backing Track

Mayzie La Bird – open to Reception – Year 2

Mayzie LaBird is a sneaky bird who tricks Horton into helping her take care of her egg.

We are looking for a performer who is a good singer and great actor and can sell Mayzie’s larger-than-life personality.
Mayzie La Bird Script Oh the Thinks you can think! - Song lyrics Oh The Thinks You Can Think (from 1.27 until 2mins) - Vocal Track Oh The Thinks You Can Think (from 1.27 until 2mins) - Backing Track

Sour Kangaroo – open to Reception – Year 2

Loud, brassy, and a lot of fun. She’s got a lot of attitude but isn’t mean – she’s just very confident and unafraid to tell it like it is.

We are looking for a young performer who can sing and act well and can serve up a good deal of attitude whilst working well alongside the Young Kangaroo.
Sour Kangaroo - Script Monkeying Around - Song Lyrics Monkeying Around (from 1.56 until 2.26) - Vocal Track Monkeying Around (from 1.56 until 2.26) - Backing Track

  • Judge Yertle The Turtle – The authoritative judge who presides over Horton’s trial at the end of the show.

  • The Wickersham Brothers – They tease, play pranks, and get a kick out of making mischief, although often at another’s expense – but they aren’t the bad guys
