Plot

L. Frank Baum’s classic novel comes to life in The Wizard of Oz. Young Dorothy Gale is swept away by a tornado from her Kansas farm to the magical land of Oz. There, she encounters a host of whimsical characters: good witches, bad witches, animals that talk, scarecrows that walk, and things magical to behold. To find her way home, she must journey along the Yellow Brick Road to see the mysterious and all-powerful Wizard in Emerald City.

Along the way, she makes new friends, but must also brave many dangers, including the Wicked Witch of the West, who will stop at nothing to get her hands on Dorothy’s magical ruby slippers. To make it home safely, Dorothy must learn an important lesson: there’s no place like home.

Character Descriptions

Below we have the music and lyrics for all of our principle roles where you can decide which roles you would like to audition for. You can audition for more than one role however please choose only one audition song to learn/perform.

We also would like to highlight that children/young people of any gender can audition for any of the principle roles and the production is a fully inclusive show.

Dorothy

Character Description

Dorothy Gale is a young girl living in Kansas. Dorothy is an orphan, being raised by her loving Uncle Henry and Aunt Em on their farm. During her time in Oz, Dorothy meets and befriends a host of companions: the Scarecrow, the Tin Man, and the Lion (who double as her friends work with her on the farm).

Dorothy is a supportive and caring friend. She is accepting of everyone, no matter what flaws they may struggle with (a brain, a heart, or courage) or what mistakes they may have made in the past (the Wizard). Her kindness, sympathy, and generosity earn her the love of even the most resistant hearts.

This is a wonderful role for a young actress with great stage presence.

*Please note: the script / libretto is optional if you would like to perform with a friend

For the video audition recording please use the backing track provided – not the vocal track.

Scarecrow

Character Description

The Scarecrow has spent all his days hung up on a post, overlooking his cornfield. He has little luck scaring the crows away, because he’s not sure how best to do it. Though he believes himself to be unintelligent, he proves himself to be actually quite smart on multiple occasions.

This performer doubles as Hunk, a farmhand on Uncle Henry and Aunt Em’s farm. This actor must be a good character actor with excellent musical comedic skills and strong movement/physical experience.

*Please note: the script / libretto is optional if you would like to perform with a friend

For the video audition recording please use the backing track provided – not the vocal track.

Tinman

Character Description

Though the Tin Man believes himself to be heartless, he shows time and time again how caring, sensitive, and loving he is. He would do anything for his friends, and indeed follows Dorothy into great danger to rescue her.

This performer doubles as Hickory, a farmhand on Uncle Henry and Aunt Em’s farm. This actor should be a strong character actor with movement experience and physical dexterity.

*Please note: the script / libretto is optional if you would like to perform with a friend

For the video audition recording please use the backing track provided – not the vocal track.

Lion

Character Description

The Lion has a big loud roar, but no bite. This “King of the Jungle” hardly lives up to that name — in fact, he’s a big coward. The Lion is gentle and meek, and easily scared at the slightest provocation. He attempts to hide his cowardly nature with a lot of big talk and blustery show.

This performer doubles as Zeke, a farmhand on Uncle Henry and Aunt Em’s farm. This actor should be a strong character actor with excellent comedic skill and timing.

*Please note: the script / libretto is optional if you would like to perform with a friend

For the video audition recording please use the backing track provided – not the vocal track.

Glinda

Character Description

Glinda is the Good Witch of the North and is a kind and caring mother figure for Dorothy when she arrives in the magical land of Oz. She is angelic in nature whilst also the leader and protector of the Munchkins in Munchkinland.

This performer should be a good actor with a beautiful singing voice.

For the video audition recording please use the backing track provided – not the vocal track.

Wicked Witch of the West

Character Description

The Wicked Witch of the West is the villain of the story and malevolent ruler of the Winkie Country. This power-hungry character has a flair for the dramatic and greedy for the magic ruby slippers. Although her powers are strong, the Wicked Witch often gets what she wants through manipulation and schemes, not magic.

This performer doubles as Miss Gulch, the wealthy land owner and neighbour of Aunt Em. This is a non-singing character and we are looking for an actor who can command the stage and execute their iconic spine-tingling cackle.

For the video audition recording please use the backing track provided – not the vocal track.
