A bit about the show...

Seussical JR. begins with a young boy named JoJo who conjures up the Cat in the Hat with his powerful imagination and is whisked to the Jungle of Nool for a fantastical adventure.

There, JoJo learns of the plight of the tiny citizens of Whoville, who live on a planet the size of a speck of dust. Their sole protector is Horton the Elephant, who is the only one with large and sensitive enough ears to hear them bipping and beeping and playing their oompahs. The small world is threatened by Sour Kangaroo and the Wickersham Brothers, who in disbelief that a world could be so small, try to steal the dust-speck so they can cast it into a vat of Beezle-Nut oil.

During all of this drama, Horton has not noticed that he has an admirer, Gertrude McFuzz. She blames his indifference on her one-feather short tail and endeavors to find a way to change her looks.

Meanwhile, Horton’s friend, Mayzie La Bird, is bored of perching on her nest, and convinces the watchful elephant to sit on her egg so she can take a vacation. The Cat follows all of these storylines and finally casts the boy into his own as the irresponsible son of Mr. and Mrs. Mayor of Whoville, JoJo, who ultimately saves his whole tiny world with one big, imaginative “think”.

Character Descriptions

Below we have the music and lyrics for all of our principal roles where you can decide which roles you would like to audition for. You can audition for more than one role.

We also would like to highlight that children of any gender can audition for any of the principle roles and the production is a fully inclusive show.  We won’t be changing the gender of the role or the name of the character or the pronouns associated with the character, as this would be a violation of copyright.

Please note that there are other supporting roles that are not listed below, all auditonees will also be considered for these roles. Keep an eye out on our socials for information about some of these other incredible parts.

For your video recording please use the backing track provided, not the vocal track.

Please perform the musical numbers, using acting through song suitable for the character – don’t just sing the song, please be the character!

The Cat in the Hat – open to Stage 2 (Y3-Y6)

The essence of mischief, fun, and imagination. The Cat stirs things up and causes trouble but always sets things right again. He helps JoJo discover the power of his own imagination as they create the story of Seussical JR. together.

We are looking for a physically adept actor (male or female) who is confident onstage, comfortable with comedy, and able to improvise with the audience if needed. The Cat needs good rhythm and timing when singing.

Jojo – open to Stage 2 (Y3-Y6)

A “Thinker.”

Jojo’s a smart child with a wild imagination. JoJo can be played as being a little bit awkward, a little bit of a loner, or simply a kid whose “Thinks” get them into constant trouble.

By the end of the show, they learn what it means to be a responsible member of the community, using the power and possibilities of a person’s own “Thinks.”

Jojo Script It's Possible - Song Lyrics It's Possible (up to 1min) - Vocal track It's Possible (up to 1min) - Backing track

Horton the Elephant – open to Stage 2 (Y3-Y6)

A gentle giant. Think of Horton as a big-hearted, blue-collar guy who is steadfast, responsible, and always tries to do the right thing. He is sympathetic and receptive to the world around him. He believes in the inherent goodness of the world, so it’s no surprise that he always looks for the good in others. Horton goes on quite a journey throughout the show but stays true to himself, even when the going gets tough.

We are looking for a great singer and actor in this important role.

Mr. Mayor and Mrs. Mayor – open to Stage 2 (Y3-Y6)

Mr. Mayor and Mrs. Mayor are parents trying hard to raise a child with a big imagination. These Whos may get aggravated with JoJo, but they love him dearly. They try their best to make the right choices as parents, even if JoJo doesn’t always understand them. They are also upstanding members of their community.
We are looking for two performers who are good singers and pair well together. Remember, Mr. and Mrs. Mayor are a team.

Gertrude McFuzz – open to Stage 2 (Y3-Y6)

Very self-conscious about her one-feather tail. Gertrude gains confidence throughout the show, changing from an anxious, nervous, shy bird into someone whose self-worth doesn’t rest on her appearance. In other words, Gertrude realizes what’s truly important in her life.
We are looking for a wonderful actor and a great singer in this role, who works well with Horton.

Mayzie La Bird – open to Stage 2 (Y3-Y6)

Self-centered, vain, and manipulative. She ultimately means no harm, but she’s immature and makes selfish decisions. In giving up her egg to Horton once and for all, she has a moment of self- awareness – she realizes she isn’t the kind of bird who would be a good parent, and she does the best thing she can for the egg.
We are looking for a performer who is a good singer and great actor and can sell Mayzie’s larger-than-life personality.

Sour Kangaroo – open to Stage 2 (Y3-Y6)

Loud, brassy, and a lot of fun. She’s got a lot of attitude but isn’t mean – she’s just very confident and unafraid to tell it like it is.
We are looking for a great actor with a bring-down-the-house singing voice who is unafraid of making bold choices onstage.

Other named parts –

These are smaller singing and acting roles, great for someone who is wanting to build their confidence or wants to have a little something extra to do!
  • Judge Yertle The Turtle – The authoritative judge who presides over Horton’s trial at the end of the show.
  • The Grinch – Arguably the most famous Seuss character of all! He has a brief, fun cameo in Seussical JR.
  • The Wickersham Brothers – They tease, play pranks, and get a kick out of making mischief, although often at another’s expense – but they aren’t the bad guys
  • The Bird Girls –  A fabulous group of birds who know everything there is to know about the goings on in the jungle and support Mayzie throughout the show.
  • Young Kangaroo – Sour Kangaroo’s feisty daughter. She may be pint- sized, but she’s got a big personality and is following in her mother’s footsteps.
  • Vlad Vladikoff – a non-singing role, but we are looking for a performer who can make a BIG impression in the short amount of time they are on stage. Great for someone who is wanting a stepping stone towards bigger roles in the future.
