Plot
Beauty is in the eye of the ogre in Shrek The Musical Jr., based on the Oscar-winning DreamWorks Animation film and fantastic Broadway musical. It’s a ‘big bright beautiful world’ as everyone’s favourite ogre, Shrek, leads a cast of fairytale misfits on an adventure to rescue a princess and find true acceptance. Part romance and part twisted fairy tale, Shrek Jr. is a fun show with a powerful message for the whole family.
Once upon a time, in a far away swamp, they lived an ogre named Shrek. One day, Shrek finds his swamp invaded by banished fairytale misfits who have been cast off by Lord Farquaad, a tiny terror with big ambitions. When Shrek sets off with a wisecracking donkey to confront Faarquaad, he’s handed a task – if he rescues feisty Princess Fiona, his swamp will be righted. Shrek tries to win Fiona’s love and vanquish Lord Farquaad, but a fairytale wouldn’t be complete without a few twists and turns along the way!
Character Descriptions
Below we have the music and lyrics for all of our principal roles where you can decide which roles you would like to audition for. You can audition for more than one role.
We also would like to highlight that children/young people of any gender can audition for any of the principal roles and the production is a fully inclusive show. We won’t be changing the gender of the role or the name of the character or the pronouns associated with the character, as this would be a violation of copyright.
For your video recording please use the backing track provided, not the vocal track. Please perform the musical numbers, using acting through song suitable for the character – don’t just sing the song.
Shrek – open to Year 4+
Character Description
He may be a big, scary, green ogre to the rest of the world, but as the story reveals, he really just a big fellow with a big heart. Shrek needs to be a solid singer, but most importantly we need someone who is an excellent actor with great comedy timing.
Princess Fiona – open to Year 4+
Character Description
She may appear to be an ideal princess straight from the fairy tale books, but there is more to her than that stereotypical image. She is a brave young lady with a wonderful sense of humour and surprisingly – manners akin to those of a teenage boy. We need someone with a loveable spirit who can do it all, sing, dance, act… and burp!
Teen Fiona – open to Year 4+
Character Description
A teenage version of Princess Fiona – this role requires strong vocals.
Young Fiona – open to Year 4+
Character Description
A young version of Princess Fiona – this role requires strong vocals.
Lord Farquaad – open to Year 4+
Character Description
Lord Farquaad is a very short man with a gargantuan ambition! He is solely interested in gaining as much power as possible. This is a role for a good singer, but most importantly, we are looking for a comedian who isn’t afraid of making bold choices on stage.
Donkey – open to Year 4+
Character Description
Donkey is a brash, loud, fast-talking animal with no concept of ‘quiet time’. We will be casting an experienced performer who can sing well and has huge presence and character. We will be choosing a performer who complements Shrek well as his loyal and ever-faithful sidekick.
Dragon – open to Year 4+
Character Description
Dragon is a breakout role for a young person with a lot of soul. She is a ferocious fire-breathing dragon but finds a surprising love in Donkey. We will be casting a performer who has tremendous presence and a good pop singing voice.
Mama Ogre & Papa Ogre – open to Year 4+
Character Description
Mama Ogre and Papa Ogre are good roles for a dynamic duo that can kick off the show with a lot of energy and presence. We are looking for strong singers for these parts.
Pinocchio – open to Year 4+
Character Description
Pinocchio is the wooden boy who cannot tell a lie without being belied by his growing nose. Pinocchio begins in a sour mood about his second-class status but ends the story as a natural leader among the Fairy Tale Creatures. We will be casting a young performer with a lot of personality who can sing well.
Pig 1, Pig 2, Pig 3 – open to Year 3+
Character Description
The 3 Little Pigs are the classic characters with a German twist. It isn’t necessary that they look identical; we will be focusing on finding a fun dynamic trio.
The Ugly Duckling – open to Year 3+
Character Description
The Ugly Duckling may be bitter about his unfortunate appearance, but he does find camaraderie among his fellow fairytale outcasts. This is a fun comedic role.
Mama Bear, Papa Bear and Baby Bear – open to Year 3+
Character Description
Mama Bear, Papa Bear and Baby Bear are great cameo roles for young performers who have little performing experience but make a complementary group.
The Wicked Witch – open to Year 4+
Character Description
The Wicked Witch is a great role for a young performer destined to be a character actress. She has a big personality, so we will be looking for a performer who is up for the task.
The Big Bad Wolf – open to Year 4+
Character Description
The Big Bad Wolf doesn’t need to be a scary, threatening big bad wolf type. At this point, he’s a pretty tame wold who is reduced to wearing Little Red Riding Hood’s grandmother’s dressing gown. This is a fun role!
Gingy – open to Year 3+
Character Description
Gingy is a great cameo role for a young performer who is as earnest as can be. Gingy is based on the Gingerbread Man who runs away like a fugitive from his baking captors. We will be looking for an actor with great vocal energy.
Peter Pan – open to Year 3+
Character Description
Peter Pan is the boy who never grew up, and he continues to act the part in this story. We will be casting someone who will have fun physicalising the character.
Captain of the Guard – open to Year 3+
Character Description
Captain of the Guard is just right for an actor with some inherent strength and authority. He or she doesn’t have to have a lot of stage experience; we will be casting someone who has a big booming voice and who isn’t scared to put all the Fairy Take Creatures in their place!
